Balangan is a very fast left reef break, best on the highest or lowest tides of the month. Not a perfect wave, because most mid-tide waves tend to close out. Some surfers surf near the cliff, others surf the tail end. To get there turn right off the Uluwatu road into the road through the Suharto family owned “Pecatu Indah Resort”.

Lots of surf schools take absolute beginners there these days, so don't worry if it looks a bit crowded. Most are just floating around, not catching any waves over 3 foot high.

Balangan is probably Bali’s most beautiful and clean white sand beach, a great place to relax for a day. There is an unusual temple half-way along the beach with statues hidden by magic black and white checked cloth, representing the eternal conflict and balance between good and evil. Balangan may close out every 50 metres or so, but that 50 metres can be the fastest buzz you’ve ever had! Wear reef boots.

Our #1 Recommendation for Balangan

It's definitely worth the $5 a day for TRAVEL INSURANCE to avoid having to pay $50,000 for an Emergency Flight if you get badly injured on the sharp coral reefs or crazy roads.

Money

Indonesia’s monetary unit is the RUPIAH (Roo-pee-ah) symbolised as “Rp”. Like Dollars, rupiah are  written “Rp 1,000” but said “1,000 Rupiah”. Some tourists refer to “Rupes” when speaking English, but when speaking Indonesian you should only say “Rupiah”. Recently one Australian Dollar was worth just over Rp 10,000. The rate fluctuates daily so only change enough for a few days.
