Balian rivermouth, 3 hours drive from Kuta. Photo Troy Roennfeldt,
Best time to travel:

Pronounced Bali-ahn which means magic healer. A very peaceful rivermouth left and right peak, rolling for 200 metres over round river rocks. Cops heaps of swell, rarely under 4 foot and often bigger than Uluwatu, so gets crowded when small.

It takes close to 3 hours driving from Kuta to Tabanan, on to Soka, then follow the coast 6km and turn left just past Sacred River Resort.

Trade winds blow side-shore, so arrive at sunrise, or stay over night at the superb Gajah Mina Resort. There are rumours of other rarely surfed breaks nearby. Go exploring! Another 20 minutes drive north brings you to Medewi.

Our #1 Recommendation for Balian

It's definitely worth the $5 a day for TRAVEL INSURANCE to avoid having to pay $50,000 for an Emergency Flight if you get badly injured on the sharp coral reefs or crazy roads.

Indonesia’s monetary unit is the RUPIAH (Roo-pee-ah) symbolised as “Rp”. Like Dollars, rupiah are  written “Rp 1,000” but said “1,000 Rupiah”. Some tourists refer to “Rupes” when speaking English, but when speaking Indonesian you should only say “Rupiah”. Recently one Australian Dollar was worth just over Rp 10,000. The rate fluctuates daily so only change enough for a few days.
